Inside the Cullinan Black Badge Series II

The Cullinan may still be “aesthetically challenged” to put it politely but its sheer presence is undeniable. Longer and wider than a Range Rover, it has a carved-from-oak solidity that instantly puts ordinary family SUVs in their place. And clearly, the look resonates with buyers: the Cullinan is now Rolls-Royce’s best-selling model.

As ever, the finest way to appreciate a Rolls-Royce is from the rear seats, and the Cullinan is no exception. Swing open the vast, rear-hinged coach doors and you’re welcomed into a serene cocoon. The lambswool carpets are deep enough to disappear into, the individual rear chairs recline like First Class airline seats, and the headrests feel like freshly fluffed pillows.

If practicality calls, there’s also the option of a three-seat rear bench with a folding backrest as fitted to my test car which expands boot capacity from 560 litres to an enormous 1,930 litres. Just resist the temptation to load your Rolls-Royce with garden waste on a trip to the tip. Some luxuries are sacrosanct.
